SOUTH CORDILLERA

  Terrain - CENTRAL PATAGONIAN ANDES

This entails the summits lying between 48 deg. South Latitude and the level of the towns of Coihaique and Puerto Aisen at approximately 44.5 degrees.  In this area the peaks of importance are mainly on the Chilean side, with many centered around the valley of the Baker River and the great Northern Icecap (Campo de Hielo Norte).

A view from Baker River valley of Cerro Arenales, a stratovolcano, which at 3437 m. altitude, dominates the southern sector of Chile's Northern Icecap. Click to see big picture (556x380 pixels; 86 KB)
I believe this shot through the clouds is the summit of Monte San Valentin on the northern edge of Chile's Northern Icecap.  It is the only patagonian peak over 4000 meters altitude. Click to see big picture (570x360 pixels; 55 KB)
